How do you do sprint planning meetings when you have, for example, 60 people and 8 teams working on the same product? One neat way is to get them all into the same room and do them together. This is a great way to stimulate collaboration and resolve dependencies - but there are some important practical aspects to take into consideration. Having done this with several different companies over the past few years I’d like to share some experiences and lessons learned.
I will focus on the practical aspects of getting this to work, with photographs and examples from real cases.
I did this at the Scrum Gathering last year, the room was crammed! Turned out that many people are struggling with this issue and were happy to see some concrete examples.
I will start by describing which circumstances might call for a big multi-team sprint planning meetings. I’ll show a typical agenda for such a meeting and what needs to be prepared.
Then I’ll show a series of real-life photographs from sprint planning meetings with 60-80 people simultaneously, illustrating how the room is set up, how people move around during different phases of the meeting, and some typical problems that occur.
I will wrap it up by showing a retrospective from such a meeting and some practical considerations to keep in mind.
